WHILE WAITING FOR the SUV to warm up, Noah lifted the file folder from Bree’s lap and flipped it open. “We can catch the janitor who polishes the floors later, at the school, since he works nights. Let’s save him for last.” He rifled through the papers. “Maintenance guy or assistant custodian next?”

“The maintenance man has been working there almost as long as Rusty. Seems odd that one of the long-timers would suddenly do something like this.” She leaned across the console and scanned the paper in Noah’s hand. “I vote we talk to Ed Charleston, head of maintenance.”

She tipped her head to meet his eyes, her curls releasing a scent that brought images of palm trees and beaches. Coconut. Citrus. A tropical flower he could picture but had no name for. Her lips, close enough to kiss, parted slightly. He just needed to lean in a fraction of an inch—

In one swift move, Bree straightened and was back on her side of the console as if nothing had almost happened. Noah released a silent sigh of frustration. With any luck, his sister would decide Bree was ready to solo sooner than later. Then he’d be rid of the constant temptation that tortured him when he was with her. Not just her physical attraction but a bone-deep hankering to know everything about her.

He glanced at Ed’s address, handed the file back to Bree and pulled away from the curb. Just a few blocks away from the Nailses’ residence, Noah parked in front of another older home. This entire neighborhood featured small houses with neat yards.

Bree, silent during the short drive, paused with her fingers on the door handle. “Want to do the talking again?”

“Sure. But when we visit Jack Williams after Ed, I think we should both question him. I’ve arrested him several times and he doesn’t know you, so double-teaming him might knock him off balance.”

He could tell by how her lips tried to twitch into a smile that Bree liked this plan.

They climbed out and started up the walk. Before Noah could ring the bell, a porch light came on and the front door opened.

A large, square man stood in the entry, wearing a belligerent frown. “Wondered how long before you got around to asking us questions. Might as well come in.” Ed Charleston stepped back and held the door for them.

“‘Us’?” Noah asked, and by the rise of her brow, he knew Bree’s curiosity was also piqued.

“Us, as in maintenance-and-cleaning crew. If anything goes missing or gets broken, it’s always us who get blamed.”

Once they were inside, out of the cold, Noah shook Ed’s hand. “We’re not just interviewing the cleaning and maintenance employees.”

“Came to us first, though, didn’t you?” Although his hostility was evident, he was keeping it in check. But if this man had any information, Noah doubted he’d be sharing it.

Bree suddenly leaned forward, a ridiculous, toothy grin on her face. “Hi there. I’m Deputy Delgado. My partner has absolutely no manners—but then, Marge over at the Busy B warned me about that.
